Pretty much a year ago today I accepted a job to become the Assistant Director of Beth Sholom Day Camp. Knowing I was going to be moving to New York and really having no idea what I was getting myself in for. A year later I know it was one of the best decisions I have ever made, and to be part of such a strong community is pretty special. Growing up in England, Chanukah was the time of the year I looked forward to the most. Lighting the candles with my family, singing songs and eating delicious food was always so much fun. As I have grown older this has happened less and less so knowing I would be in a temple, It was nice that the atmosphere I remember as a kid was so present this year all around.
This past week was Chanukah. Which means Temple Beth Sholom was filled with Doughnuts, latkes and dreidels. (Not a great week if you’re trying to watch your weight.)I spent some time with kids of all different ages this week. From reading to the ECC, discussing the deeper meanings of Chanukah with HebrewHigh School and making Latkes with USY. One thing is very clear to me; the energy surrounding the festival of light, reminds me of the summer time at Beth Sholom Day Camp. The singing, dancing and joy embody everything we try and achieve during the summer.
Have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year!
